Open Air Space Drawing series

“Rolling Space_ A Tale of an Eagle” was developed as  Sun K. Kwak recalled the significant time of struggle and brought out Eagle drawing on paper from the past during the pandemic lock down and rolled the piece.  Kwak recreated this 2D drawing by “rolling” it into 3D form as a symbolic action for wrapping up the obstacles as an artist. This concept originated from her  traveling motif drawing project among Kwak's "Space Drawing" series that has traveled to different cities with a drawing motif and constantly evolved in response to each specific site using diverse materials in various approaches. The work started to travel in 2006 from Seoul (Korea) to Madrid (Spain) to New York (USA) to Taichung (Taiwan), and finally was back to Seoul (Korea). Rolling Space (2015), the final traveling piece of this project, was created in a rolled form of the motif drawing Space Take-out as a symbol of wrapping up the long journey. Expanding its dimension, the work became the inspiration for creating “A Tale of an Eagle”, Kwak's  first Open-Air Space Drawing series made of polished stainless steel, is fabricated.  Working remotely with a production team in Italy was a unique challenge that the artist faced during the pandemic as the fabrication required a thorough communication.   As the rolled Space Drawing piece meets the new medium, polished stainless steel, “A Tale of an Eagle” expands into a new arena in an open-air setting and embodies( embracing) the surrounding nature and people together in the artwork through its reflection.  Placed in a historical venue as San Clemente Palace Kempinski for Venice Biennale 2001.

도미후 “Wire Jacket” 이라는 작가의 고백적 퍼포먼스 직후 시작된“ Space Drawing( 공간 드로잉)” 시리즈는, 대량 생산되어 손쉽게 구입, 소모 되어지는 매스킹 테잎이라는 재료를 가지고 켭켭이 쌓여지는 선들과 시간으로 이루어지는, 공간에 제약없이 그려 나아가는 즉흥적 드로잉이다. 물리적인 것으로 시작한 자신으로부터의 자유 를 위한 ‘비움’의 과정과 화상적 현실로 공간을 탈바꿈하는 퍼포먼스적 드로잉작업 이다. 
반면에 first Open- air Space Drawing 은 공간드로잉이 말려 확장적 영역으로 나아가 열린공간에 놓여지는 또 하나의 선적인 드로잉의 형태이며, 연마된 스테인레스 라는 재료성이 가진 투영성을 통해 시시각각 변하는 자연과 주변을 반영하는 야외 공간 드로잉이다. 이 " Rolling Space_ A Tale of an Eagle” 은 2017년도 ‘폭풍의 눈 속으로 들어가 그 기압을 이용해 폭풍의 영역 위로 뚫고 올라가 비상하는 독수리’의 이야기를 듣고 추상화 한 드로잉을, 2020년도 시간이 멈추어진듯한 팬데믹 시기에 꺼내어 상징적 행위로써 그 드로잉을 말아 야외로 내보낸 것 이다. 처음 종이모형의 형태로 제작하여 이태리의 제작소와 형상화 시킨 작품으로 이는 말이형태로 공간을 새롭게 바라보는 시각 ,”Rolling Space”, 2015 의 컨셉과 재료의 투영성으로 주변공간까지 끌어들인 작업으로 현재 베니스 비엔날레의 공시 전시장소중 하나인 ‘생클라멘테 캠핀스키 궁’에 전시중이다.
“Rolling Space” 는"Space Drawing"시리즈의 일부 프로젝트로, 하나의 드로잉 모티프가 여행하며 각 장소의 특정적 요소에 반응하며 각기 다른 재료, 다른 형태로 자라나며 자리잡고 그 다음 장소를 여행하는, 나를 비롯한 수많은 현대인의 디아스포라적 삶을 반영하는 장소 특정적 작업이다. 이 드로잉 모티브 여행의 여정은 2006년 서울로부터 출발하여->마드리드, 스페인->뉴욕, 미국->테이청,대만->서울로 2015년에 돌아와 폴리비닐 컷 아웃으로 제작되어 다시 새로운 시공간으로 말려들어가는 모습의 조각적 드로잉의 형태로 그 긴 여정을 마치게 된다.
